Hello all, I just released Deep Sjeng 3.0. Although it is not as strong as Rybka, it is one of the close followers and I had some good battles with Vasik for the tournament victory in Leiden. I look forward to our next clash in the Mainz Chess Classic!
So for those few positions where Rybka does not find the best move yet, you might want to consider Deep Sjeng. It's an UCI compatible engine which also supports Fischerandom/Chess960. The price is 39 EUR and that includes the multiprocessor and 64-bit versions.
My best wishes to Vasik for his own 3.0 release! Most improved compared to the previous versions are the understanding of active piece play & dynamic compensation, and better long term planning ability. Play transitioning into pawn endgames is also a lot better. In general the engine is quite willing to take risks if it thinks it can get away with it. This can lead to spectacular victories but also to defeats that are just painful to watch.
To give an example, Deep Sjeng is really great at letting the opponent come at its position if it's solid but cramped. I played the Kan/Paulsen Sicilian in a few tournaments (including the World Champs) and it did well there, holding back Rybka in one game, and coming very close to kill off Zappa in another. Not bad for an opening that many people shrug. One of the most unique features are the singular extensions.
They allow the engine to completely see through forced move sequences. Deep Sjeng can even do this even for strong positional moves. In positions where they are active they can allow the engine to have a much higher 'effective' search depth compared to other engines. As far as I know only Zappa has something similar and even then it can only do it for tactics. The win over Hiarcs 12 in the last Leiden tournament was mostly because of this. Sorry, that's more than two sentences! But most people only ask about ELO so far:).
I measured about 90 ELO for 32-bit new vs 32-bit old and 110 ELO for 64-bit new vs 32-bit old. This is with error margins of about the difference and it may also depend on what opponents you test against. But your results should be in the same ballpark. 100 ELO is a good average.
I am aware of the erratic results of 2.7 SMP in CCRL and CEGT. The SMP has been rewritten for 3.0 and I believe the results will be better and more stable now. CEGT and CCRL have the engine and I guess you should see results soon. No book is included. I might make one available for free later on if we get more time to test openings. IMHO the engine should play as much openings as possible well, rather than to rely on a fixed set of knowledge (the book) that can quickly become outdated, so I have to say this is not really a priority for me. For the same reason Nalimov endgame database support has been removed from the engine.
There was no detectable difference in strength with or without them, so why keep gigabytes of junk around? It's much better to have the knowledge in the engine. Bitbases might also be interesting. I suspect the same will be true for engines like Rybka, maybe Vasik wants to comment. DS needs EGTB's.
Not having it hurts its performance. Especially if the other engine has EGTB's. I am testing it against Rybka using a non Rybka book (Zappa II book) in 5 0 match on a Quadcore 3.6 Ghz and Rybka is scoring around 90%.
Many of the losses are in the endgame where lack of EGTB's hurts performance. So far Rybka has only one loss. I haven't looked at that game but it should be interesting. It is refreshing to see a totally different engine output than Rybka. But unfortunately Rybka's evaluation seems correct most of the time.
Interesting Shaun. I have recentely acquired 2 pieces of Transcend 32GB USB pen drives. I am using them for EGTB's and it seems very good.

I use only the 22GB tables that usually come with the Endgame Turbo DVD's. What do you think is the best EGTB's to have for 32GB. And for another 32GB so a total of 64GB. Will having 64GB of EGTB's on USB drives hurt performance? Also is there a decent advantage of using SSD's instead of USB pen drives?
Derivative Of 3^x
I have been thinking of using 2 SSD's in RAID 0 to improve performance of EGTB's but am not sure if it is worth the effort.
